Down the rabbit hole.

For the final assignment of the course Information Architecture, the intention was to design an app for festival Down The Rabbit Hole. The festival has been a great success in recent years, so big that the organisation has decided to build on this success. The organisation wants to organise Rabb-iT evenings throughout the year for the real die hards. On such an evening there will not only be music played but there will also be various (cultural) activities, hopefully in this way the name recognition will increase.

Important during process:

  • There is a lot of freedom in therms of design but keep the restrictions in mind

  • Try to search for best practices and patterns

  • Present every screen in a clear way so it's understandable

It is important to have a good idea of what the purpose of the app is and how it is organised. I therefore started creating a sitemap so that I have clarity about the quantity of pages the app contains, what they are about and how they connected to each other. This way it’s organised and it will help me later on with designing the pages in therms of what content I want to show in which page.

First sketches (LoFi)

After I had the sitemap I started sketching, I already had an idea of how I wanted to design it but I had also done some desk research for inspiration. First of all, I sketched each screen in LoFi to see if the design is nicely balanced and practical, then I started drawing all these screens in HiFi again and explained each element of interest. The numbers explain what will happen when you tap the button/area of interest.

See the end result of the screens in HiFi above, I personally found it a nice assignment because I was free in the design but also because I enjoy making it. The fact that there were some restrictions attached to it actually makes it even more fun because I see a challenge in that. It's nice sometimes to do an assignment without using the computer, the approach is the same but you can quickly experiment by sketching.
